AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL FOR BOYS GRADES 7-12

Four Students Recognized with Scholastic Art Awards

Six awards were given to four Belmont Hill School art students by the judges of the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Since 1923, the national program has spotlighted exceptional work by artists and writers in grades 7 through 12. The School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) at Tufts and the Boston Globe partner to present the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in 29 categories for the state of Massachusetts.

The students were recognized for their artistic talent and vision in photography, illustration, and digital art. It is the second year that Elias Hyde ’20 has received the Gold Key. In addition to inclusion in a regional exhibition (March 16-25, 2019), Gold Key works automatically advance to national judging. In New York City, renowned creative professionals review Gold Key works from across the country.

The regionals awards are judged by a panel, which votes to award Gold Keys, Silver Keys, and Honorable Mentions. In a competitive field of thousands of entries, the following Belmont Hill students of Mrs. Kaplan and Mr. Duarte were honored:

  • Elias Hyde ’20 received a Gold Key in drawing and illustration for his work entitled “Protest I”

  • Andew Lee ’20 received an Honorable Mention for digital art entitled “You”

  • Alex Sousa ’22 received Honorable Mentions for two photographs, “Leaf and Light” and “Ascend”

  • Abe Tolkoff ’21 received Honorable Mentions for two photographs, “Manny & Boots” and “Manny Looking”
