AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL FOR BOYS GRADES 7-12

Mr. McAlpin Selected to Special Program Studying the Work of Author John Steinbeck

One of the fondest memories of science teacher John McAlpin’s childhood is the time he spent reading author John Steinbeck’s work.
Last summer, he nominated Cannery Row as a summer reading book for the boys. One of the novel’s central characters, and Mr. McAlpin's favorite, is Doc, a marine biologist who studies and collects sea creatures from all along the California coast.  Noting his book selection, colleague Juliette Zener told Mr. McAlpin about The Steinbeck Institute, now named John Steinbeck: Social Critic and Ecologist. Mr. McAlpin decided to investigate.

Intrigued by what he learned about the Institute, Mr. McAlpin applied to the highly selective summer program and was accepted. “I’m very honored to be selected,” he states. “Only about 25 percent of applicants are selected so this is quite a thrill.”

During the three-week program the group will go tidal pooling one day, take a boat to Monterey Bay and learn about the collapsed sardine fishery, visit Red Pony Ranch, and see Steinbeck’s childhood home in Salinas, and more. Follow this link and this one to learn more the activities and schedule.

“For me it’s a personal dream come true,” Mr. McAlpin reflects. “John Steinbeck has been such a part of my life, it will be nice to walk in his footsteps.”
