Health and Wellness

About the program

The teenage years are challenging and one’s ability to make healthy, sound decisions are constantly being tested. The mission of the Belmont Hill Health and Wellness program is to empower young men to lead a healthy physical, mental, and social lifestyle. The weekly class provides students an opportunity to discuss a variety of relevant topics related to the on-going changes and challenges they are encountering. The curriculum is progressive in nature and addresses issues that are timely in a student’s development with topics that include:
 
  • Nutrition, relationships, safety, sleep, exercise, stress management, sexuality, consent, substance use and abuse, and social media.   
  • Encouragement and promotion of self-reflection and personal growth through small-group discussion, situational learning, role-playing, reviewing current media, and journaling. 
 
Health and wellness classes meet once a week for seven weeks. Students are assigned to a fall, winter or spring season class.

  • Form I- Building Healthy Relationships

    Lessons cover physical development and nutrition, social and emotional health, and character education.

    Lessons focus on the importance of knowing oneself and the impact that one has on their greater community.

    As students think about their final year in the Middle School, having and/or developing strong self-management skills is important as they take on more responsibility and leadership roles.

    Students look at navigating their increased responsibility and how to make safe, healthy, and informed decisions. They start to see the connections between their personal goals, interests, and tasks at hand.

    • Hope Rupley, Health & Wellness Coordinator

      Hope Rupley, Health & Wellness Coordinator

In her role as Belmont Hill School’s first fully dedicated coordinator and teacher of health and wellness, Ms. Rupley teaches required health classes in Forms I–IV. In addition, she works with Form V and VI advisors on specific health and wellness classes for these two upper forms and serves as a Form II advisor. Additionally, Ms. Rupley collaborates parent education programs on a variety of topics. She holds an M.A. in counseling psychology from Lesley University and a B.A.S. in communications with a minor in history from Boston College, and also worked as a psychiatric counselor at Emerson Hospital.
