Bill Konigsberg Helps Kick Off Diversity Focus Week

Writer Bill Konigsberg, an openly gay, award-winning sports journalist and author, helped kick off Belmont Hill's Diversity Focus Week by addressing students and faculty at a School Meeting on February 9th.
Mr. Konigsberg came out in an article on the ESPN website in 2001 and won a GLAAD Media Award the following year. His current novel, Out of the Pocket, depicts a star high school quarterback in California who is outed by a classmate against his will. Mr. Konigsberg read a passage from the book. Before and after his talk he visited classrooms and talked about his work in sports journalism.

During the School Meeting, Konigsberg delivered a poignant and inspirational talk about his life and his struggles with coming out and accepting who he is. He explained to the boys why it is important for him to talk about these struggles so that others might understand. The talk was followed by a lengthy question-and-answer period, and Mr. Konigsberg received a warm ovation at the conclusion.
