Form II Students Meet Virtually with General Mark Milley ’76, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Wife, Hollyanne
Form II students were treated to a special virtual meeting with General Mark Milley ’76, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his wife, Hollyanne.
General Milley’s talk focused primarily on leadership, and what he considers to be the pillars of leadership: competence, commitment, compassion, courage, and character.
Mrs. Milley also joined in the discussion, and shared some of the projects completed by wounded warriors who experience healing through art, music, dance, movement, and writing therapy. She is a nurse who also volunteers countless hours helping veterans.
General Milley explained that he felt a calling to a cause that was bigger than himself. He devoutly believes in the strength of the constitution and stressed that all Americans owe a great debt to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country in order that others may have a better life. He especially impressed upon the boys the importance of service of all kinds, and giving back to others. He said the skills he learned at Belmont Hill remain with him each day: critical thinking, being skeptical and asking questions, writing and oral presentation skills, and a lifelong love of learning.
General and Mrs. Milley concluded the talk by taking questions from the boys, patiently getting to know each of them personally and candidly responding to their inquiries. This was a special opportunity for the boys and the School is deeply grateful to General and Mrs. Milley for their kindness.
