AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL FOR BOYS GRADES 7-12

Mark Milley ’76 Voted Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff

Mark Milley ’76 was confirmed in a senate vote Thursday as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

General Milley becomes the 20th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest-ranking and senior-most officer in the United States Armed Forces and the principal military advisor to the President.

“One can't help but feel inspired after spending time with General Milley,” says Greg Schneider, Ronald M. Druker ’62 Head of School. “I say that as a grateful American but also as a leader at Belmont Hill. General Milley’s example of integrity and leadership continually reminds me that our mission of developing young men of character is more relevant than ever.”

While attending Belmont Hill, General Milley distinguished himself as an outstanding student and athlete, who was also Vice President of the Student Council and an editor of the School paper. General Milley was awarded the Belmont Hill Distinguished Alumni Award in 2015. The School’s highest alumni honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes men who have exemplified in life those qualities that the School seeks to instill: honesty, excellence, integrity, respect, and caring for others. In speaking to the Belmont Hill boys during his visit to campus to accept the award, he told them, "At the end of the day, in the dark of the night, when no one is around you and things aren't going well, it is your character that holds you together…Reflect on how privileged we are as Americans to have the freedoms we have and never forget how we got them, who paid for them, and how they were bought."

General Milley’s hockey coach at Belmont Hill, Ken Martin ’65, says he is immensely proud of him. “He is well respected by the other generals, and he is very thoughtful about his men and women who serve our country,” says Mr. Martin. “He commands respect whenever he speaks, and he thinks deeply about the future. He and his wife, Hollyanne, make a great team and they understand what an honor it is to serve our country.”
