Tim Buckley ’87 spoke at the annual Michael Sherman Lecture in chapel on Friday, May 10.
Mr. Buckley, brother of Belmont Hill history department chair Dr. Kara Buckley, is chairman and CEO of Vanguard, the largest mutual fund company in the world with 20 million investors and over 5 trillion dollars in assets. Outside of Vanguard, he has served as chairman of the board at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia. He earned an A.B. in economics from Harvard College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. At Belmont Hill, he was captain of the football team and rowed in the famous Belmont Hill boat that won the Princess Elizabeth Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta.
The funding for this lecture series was donated by Edward and Marcia Nalebuff, whose son Barry graduated from Belmont Hill in 1976. Barry was Belmont Hill’s only Rhodes Scholar and is now a Professor at the Yale School of Management, where for thirty years he has taught negotiation, innovation, strategy, and game theory. Originally, the series started twenty years ago as the Nalebuff Lecture Series and was renamed for Mr. Sherman in 2011. Mr. Sherman provided the introduction to Mr. Buckley.
Mr. Buckley delivered a fascinating speech about his work, prefacing it by stating that he would talk about a Belmont Hill education as the foundation for the students’ future success. At the conclusion of his speech, he was greeted with a rousing standing ovation.
