The Program

The Belmont Hill hockey program has a tradition of excellence in the ISL and New England. Belmont Hill has five teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity, Thirds, Fourths, and Fifths. The rink in the Jordan Athletic Center is an Olympic-size ice sheet. Banners hang in the rink to celebrate team success (2 New England Championships, 30 ISL Championships, 18 Lawrenceville Tournament Championships, and 10 Nichols-Belmont Hill Championships), as well as individual accomplishment (4 US Hockey Hall of Famers, 6 Olympians, and 3 Hobey Baker winners). A banner also celebrates former coach Ken Martin '65's 707 career victories in 39 seasons. Coach Martin is the winningest coach in Massachusetts high school hockey history and in 2013 was inducted into the Mass Hockey Hall of Fame.

The Coach

Brian Phinney began his tenure as varsity hockey coach in 2021. Prior to Belmont Hill, Coach Phinney served as an assistant coach at Middlebury College, as well as at the Salisbury School in Connecticut. He also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at UMass-Amherst. A native of Vermont, Coach Phinney played his college hockey at Middlebury College where they won two NCAA titles, including during his senior year when he was captain and All-American. He also played lacrosse at Middlebury, capturing an NCAA title during his freshman year. After graduation, Coach Phinney played four seasons of professional hockey in Sweden. At Belmont Hill, Coach Phinney is also a history teacher, Form I advisor, and lacrosse coach.
