The Winter Athletics Awards Chapel on March 4, 2024 celebrated outstanding achievements across Alpine Skiing, Basketball, Hockey, Nordic Skiing, Squash, and Wrestling. The event highlighted the success, dedication, improvement, and sportsmanship of Belmont Hill athletes. Squash and Wrestling once again had remarkable seasons, advancing to national playoffs. The following varsity teams advanced to NEPSAC Championships: Alpine (2nd Place), Nordic (3rd Place), Hockey, Wrestling (3rd Place), and Squash (1st Place).
The following is a list of athletes and teams receiving recognition for the 2023/2024 winter season. Athletic Director George Tahan announced the honorees and trophies were presented by the respective team coach. Mr. Schneider presented the Henry B. Sawyer Sports Awards. Also highlighted were the sub varsity teams with winning seasons.
Winter Sports Awards 2024
ALPINE SKIING TROPHY WINNERS
The Alpine Ski Coaches Trophy recognizes that individual who in the judgment of his coaches has displayed the greatest improvement.

The Toni Matt award is presented to that boy who has made the greatest contribution to the Belmont Hill alpine ski team.

BASKETBALL TROPHY WINNERS
The Ex-Captains Basketball Trophy is presented to that boy who in the judgment of his coach made the greatest contribution to the season.

The Carl H. Amon Jr. Basketball Trophy is presented in honor of the former President of the Belmont Hill Board of Trustees from 1964-1987, an enthusiastic supporter of Belmont Hill Basketball and father of three former varsity basketball players. This award is given to that member of the varsity team whose unselfishness, sportsmanship and concern for team play have best exemplified the ideals of Belmont Hill athletics.

HOCKEY TROPHY WINNERS
Wyman S. Smart Jr. Hockey Trophy is awarded to that player who in the judgment of his coaches has made the greatest improvement this year.

Kenneth M. Martin Jr. Hockey Trophy, given by Mrs. Virginia Martin in memory of her husband. Mr. Martin was a member of the first graduating class at Belmont Hill in 1927. At Belmont Hill he earned 11 varsity letters and he captained the varsity hockey team three of his four years on the team. This trophy is given to the player who in the judgment of his coaches is the most valuable player on the varsity team.

NORDIC SKIING
The most improved award in Nordic skiing is awarded to that skier who in the judgment of his coaches has made the greatest improvement this year.

The Nordic Ski Coaches’ Trophy honors that young man who has contributed the most to the Belmont Hill Nordic Ski team.

SQUASH
The most improved squash player trophy is given to the boy who has exhibited the greatest progress on and off the squash court.

The Squash Coaches’ Trophy is awarded to that player who has made the greatest contribution to the sport of squash this year.

WRESTLING
The William “Bingo” Emerson wrestling trophy honors a 1960 Belmont Hill second generation graduate who was killed in Vietnam. While at Belmont Hill, he captained the wrestling team and won awards in both football and wrestling in his senior year. This award is presented to the boy who in the opinion of his coaches has exhibited the greatest improvement in wrestling.

The Gilbert S. Jordan Athletic Achievement Award in Wrestling
This bowl was donated by alumni to honor “Gibby” Jordan, a longtime wrestling coach and director of maintenance who retired in 1986. It is presented to that boy who has made the greatest contribution to the Belmont Hill Wrestling program.

HENRY B. SAWYER, Jr. ’32 AWARDS
The Henry B. Sawyer Awards were suggested by the school senate and approved by the athletic committee in 1987. These sportsmanship awards recognize Mr. Sawyer’s 52 years of service to the school. These awards are presented seasonally by sport to “ the ideal sportsman whose emotions are controlled by a genuine love and respect for his fellow man as well as the game.

Recognition of Other Winter Athletic Accomplishments
In Alpine Skiing
The alpine ski team completed a championship season with an overall record of 51 wins, and 5 losses thereby capturing the ISL championship. They followed that up with a second place finish at the New England championship race at Waterville Valley, the best finish by an ISL school at the championship. Congratulations to coaches Creedon, Trautz, Feldman, and Wallace and the alpine ski team.
In Basketball
The 5th basketball team completed an incredible season with a record of 16 wins and 1 loss. They were able to avenge a 36 point loss to Fessenden by beating them 51-47 in their second game. Congratulations to the 5th basketball team and Coaches Musler and Musler..
The 4th basketball team completed a remarkable season with a record of 19 wins and 6 losses. Congratulations to coaches LaLiberte and Chittock and the 4th basketball team.
The JV Basketball team completed an outstanding season with an overall record of 15 wins and 7 losses. Congratulations to the JV basketball team and coaches Gurley and Manigo.
Finally in varsity basketball, on January 27 in a game vs. Deerfield Academy Isaiah Langham scored his 1,000th point. Congratulations, Isaiah.
In Hockey
The 5th hockey team completed an outstanding season with a record of 17 wins, 5 losses and 4 ties. Congratulations to coaches Peck, Pare, Griffith and the 5th hockey team.
The 4th hockey team completed a remarkable season with a record of 16 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie. Congratulations to coach Cunningham and the 4th hockey team.
The 3rd hockey team completed an excellent season with a record of 15 wins, and 9 losses. Congratulations to Coaches Phinney and Hargrove and the 3rd hockey team.
The varsity hockey team completed an outstanding season with a record of 19 wins, 11 losses and 1 tie. They finished second in the ISL Keller Division. They won the school’s 20th Lawrenceville Tournament title and the second in the last 3 years. They qualified for the NEPSAC Martin/Earl Tournament. In the tournament, they lost a hard fought quarterfinal game to Dexter. Congratulations to the varsity hockey team and coaches Phinney, Pawloski, Wright, Halverson, and Abel.
Finally in hockey, the ISL Flood Shield Award is given each season to:
"The player whose enthusiasm for hockey and true devotion to the game is marked by his playing ability and physical toughness and yet whose competitive spirit is balanced by emotional control and a real desire to play within the rules of the game."
This year the ISL Keller Flood Shield has been awarded to Jake McManus. Congratulations, Jake.
In Nordic Skiing
The Nordic Ski Team completed an excellent season with an overall record of 37 wins and 3 losses. The team finished undefeated in the Friday night race series at the Weston Ski Track and second in the New Hampshire and Vermont Lakes Region League. Seven Belmont Hill Skiers were ranked in the top 20 in the Lakes Region League, including two in the top 10, Fitz Courtney at 9th and Will Walton at 2nd. They followed their regular season up by finishing 3rd at the NEPSAC Championship race at Proctor Academy. Congratulations to the Nordic Ski team and coaches DeCaprio, Calloway, Weiter, and Kirby.
In Squash
The JV squash team completed an outstanding season with a record of 9 wins and 1 loss in ISL play and finishing with an overall record of 9 wins and 3 losses. Congratulations to Coach Wellemeyer and the JV squash team.
The varsity squash team completed yet another championship season going undefeated in ISL play and finishing the season with an overall dual match record of 19 wins and 4 losses. This is the squash team’s 14th ISL Championship in the last 15 years. They followed that up by winning the NEPSAC Championship, where they defeated the Hopkins School, Phillips Exeter and Greens Farms Academy on route to the title. It is the first NEPSAC title for the team since 1986. They followed that up with a second place finish at the US Squash High School Nationals in Philadelphia, where they defeated Conestoga High School, Princeton Day School, and Greens Farms Academy before losing a close 4-3 decision to Pingry School (NJ). Congratulations to the varsity squash team and coaches Brownell and Wellemeyer.
In Wrestling
The 3rd wrestling team finished another excellent season with a record of 17 wins and 2 losses. They captured titles at the Cardigan Mountain School Tournament, The Fay School Tournament, and the New England Jr Prep Tournament at Fessenden. At the New England Junior Prep, Declan Woolbert, Grady Figler, Ilan Turevskiy, and Milo Davis were New England Champions. Milo Davis was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Season. Congratulations to Coaches Leonardis, Davis, Ryan, Sullivan, and Williams and the 3rd wrestling team.
The varsity wrestling team completed another championship season finishing with an overall record of 22 wins and 3 losses. During the season they took 1st Place at the Graves-Kelsey Wrestling Championship and won the ISL Dual meet championship by going a perfect 11-0 in ISL dual meets for the 8th consecutive year. The team finished 3rd at the New England Championship at Choate. They followed that up by finishing 13th at the Prep Wrestling Nationals at Lehigh.
- Nine Belmont Hill Wrestlers: Brody Sayers, Isaac Novod, Henry Santini, Andrew Pimental, Jack Dragoumanos, Cord Vallis, Will Stewart, Haden Bottiglieri, and Alex White were 2024 Graves Kelsey Tournament Champions.
- Haden Bottiglieri was named ISL MVP and Globe All Scholastic.
- Isaac Novod and Haden Bottiglieri were 2024 NEPSAC Champions.
- Isaac Novod, Jack Dragoumanos, and Haden Bottiglieri earned All-American status at the Prep Nationals.
