Veterans Day School Meeting Honors the Sacrifice of Major Stephen C. Reich

At a powerful Veterans Day School Meeting this morning, the Belmont Hill School community gathered to honor an American hero. Faculty member Stephen George shared the story of his brother-in-law, Major Stephen C. Reich, a West Point standout pitcher and decorated military leader, whose journey embodied service and sacrifice.

As a gifted athlete, Major Reich represented the nation he would later defend, playing for Team USA's baseball team in 1993. On June 28, 2005, Major Reich and 15 troops (8 Nightstalkers and 8 Navy SEALs) lost their lives in eastern Afghanistan when their MH-47D Chinook Helicopter was struck by enemy fire during a rescue mission—a mission chronicled in Marcus Luttrell's book "Lone Survivor."

The Belmont Hill School community was profoundly moved and humbled hearing Major Reich's story, which serves as a powerful reminder of the immense sacrifices made by our nation's veterans. His legacy embodies duty, honor, and commitment to others.

As part of Mr. George's remarks he shared a video which beautifully conveyed Major Reich's story.

As part of our ongoing Speaker Program and Veterans Day programming, we are honored to share Major Reich's story with our community. We invite you to learn about Belmont Hill alumni who have served in the military by visiting the Alumni in the Military page on our website, as we continue to honor and remember those who have defended our freedom.
