Timmy Brownell '16 Completes Epic Upset of World No. 3 Squash Player
In a professional squash career that has included four PSA World Squash Tour titles and three U.S. National championships, Timmy Brownell ’16 delivered a statement victory at the Qatar Classic with an upset of the third-ranked squash player in the world, Diego Elias. Competing as the top-ranked U.S. men’s squash player but unseeded in the tournament, Timmy was behind early before completing an unforgettable 5-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11–5, 11-7 comeback victory.

Following his win, Timmy celebrated with his coach and mom, Christina Brownell. It’s far from the first time squash has been a family affair for Timmy. His dad, Math Teacher and Head Varsity Squash Coach Bob Brownell, coached Timmy during his unprecedented six-year career on Belmont Hill’s varsity squash team.

“We are all extremely proud of Timmy and it's absolutely thrilling to watch him compete against the very best players in the world,” Coach Brownell said. “It's astonishing how hard he works every day to remain at that level.”

A three-time captain at Belmont Hill, Timmy won six consecutive ISL championships. His lone loss in an ISL match came during his seventh-grade season. Upon graduating, Timmy went to Harvard, where as co-captain he guided his team to two national championships while earning two All-America honors and three All-Ivy League selections. In his senior season, he was honored with the John P. Reardon '60 Men's Award as Harvard’s top male scholar-athlete, presented annually to the senior varsity male athlete who exemplifies the qualities of excellent scholarship, character, leadership, and athletic ability.

For all the undeniable success Timmy has found on any squash court he steps onto, it is those qualities of character that his parents hold in highest regard.

“Timmy has always been a wonderful teammate and we are most proud that he continues to be universally regarded as an honorable sportsman,” Coach Brownell said. “His journey began at Belmont Hill and it's clear to Christina and me that Timmy is doing what he loves and we take great parental pride in watching him chase his dream.”
