At this morning's opening chapel, Greg Schneider, Ronald M. Druker ‘62 Head of School welcomed the Belmont Hill community with remarks that set a reflective and optimistic tone for the new academic year. “Let me begin with a special welcome to all of our new Belmont Hill brothers, many of whom are in Form I sitting up in the balcony today,” he said. Mr. Schneider also recognized the seniors for their role in setting a positive example. “Your journey will be filled with hard work, with wins and losses, and with plenty of laughter along the way,” he said, acknowledging both the challenges and joys ahead.
Drawing on a personal story about a road trip with his daughter, Mr. Schneider shared how they listened to the novel A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. He used this story to explore deeper themes of faith and personal growth, highlighting how literature can provoke meaningful reflection and conversation. “Faith means you are searching – not sitting pretty,” he noted, encouraging students to engage actively in their own journeys of self-discovery and learning.
The speech also emphasized the unique spirit of the Belmont Hill community. “What are the spiritual qualities of the Belmont Hill experience?” Mr. Schneider posed. “I would argue that the belief we have in one another, forged through the challenge and experience of a school year, creates a fusing of souls at this school that is special. It is different from other schools. There is a thickness to our culture that binds us.” He reminded everyone of the importance of fostering dialogue and listening, especially in the face of a divisive national climate, stating, “We can and will be better than the world around us.”
In closing, the Head of School expressed his deep belief in the students and the mission of Belmont Hill. “I believe in all of you, and I believe in the power of this school,” he affirmed, leaving the community with a sense of hope and a call to live out their values with faith and conviction throughout the year.
