Peer Leader POV: Coach Ott '12

Peer Leader POV is a series created and produced by the student Peer Leader group with the goal of learning more about members of our school community.
This spotlight goes to Jeff Ott '12, a coach whose connection to Belmont Hill runs deeper than most.
Coach Ott was a student here before he was anything else, and his time on the wrestling mat was nothing short of remarkable. He was a two-time captain and four-year letter winner who helped lead the team to three league championships and a New England title in his sophomore year. By the time he graduated in 2012, he had earned four Prep New England Championships, four Prep All-American honors, a national championship, and the Dave Schultz Award, presented annually to the outstanding high school wrestler in the state of Massachusetts.
After graduating from Belmont Hill, Coach Ott went on to captain the Harvard wrestling team where he qualified for the NCAA Championships at 133 pounds. During his time there, he also organized a charity dual meet to benefit a children's hospital, demonstrating a commitment to others that extended well beyond the mat.
After Harvard, he built a career as a behavioral scientist, working at firms including Irrational Labs before his current role at John Cradden. Along the way, he also coached and taught at Roxbury Latin and St. Mark's School, gaining experience that has clearly served him well back here at Belmont Hill.
He has since returned to Belmont Hill as a coach, leading the same program that shaped him as a young man. This past winter, the varsity wrestling team won the ISL Dual Meet Championship and the Graves-Kelsey Tournament, and placed fourth at the NEPSAC Championships. The team's success reflects not only the talent on the roster, but the standard of excellence that Coach Ott helps set every day. Also, it is worth noting that Mr. Ott was himself a Peer Leader during his time as a student here, which makes this recognition feel especially fitting.

On the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the Belmont Hill community gathered for a morning Chapel to remember the event through history, poetry, and heartfelt reflection.

As the new school year formally kicked off in Hamilton Chapel on Tuesday morning, the students weren’t the only ones who arrived having done their summer reading. In his annual opening Chapel Talk, Greg Schneider, Ronald M. Druker ’62 Head of School, used his love for literature to encourage the boys to seize the opportunities awaiting them in the months ahead.

Following a comprehensive national search, Belmont Hill has appointed Amos Gilbert as the new Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach. Prior to his arrival in Massachusetts, Mr. Gilbert coached the Steamboat Springs High School lacrosse team, guiding the program to two league championships.

The Belmont Voice honored John McAlpin with a retrospective celebrating his incredible 40-year career as a Belmont Hill teacher and coach. While Mr. McAlpin retired this spring, he remains a resident of the town of Belmont and a dedicated member of the community, where he has long shown the same values of selflessness and stewardship that he brought to the Hill.
