Olympians Visit Belmont Hill Crew

This past weekend, the Belmont Hill community gathered at the Belmont Hill/Winsor Boat House as students, faculty, and alumni competed in the 60th Annual Head of the Charles Regatta.

On Friday morning, the Belmont Hill rowing community welcomed Olympians and World Record holders Martin and Valent Sinković to speak to the team and share insights into their careers and experiences on the water. The Sinkovićs were joined by Anton and Patrik Lončarić, fellow Croatian rowers and World Champions, a foursome that varsity crew coach Chris Richards referred to as “rowing royalty”.

“Having Valent and Martin Sinković come to campus is the rowing equivalent of having Michael Jordan come to campus in his prime,” Mr. Richards said. “It is hard to overstate what rock stars these guys are– multi-Olympic medalists who will be competing for their fourth Gold in Los Angeles in 2028. It’s pretty momentous for Belmont Hill crew to meet with them.”

The Belmont Hill boys took full advantage of this special opportunity, asking questions and gaining insights into the process and preparation of the world renowned athletes. A recurring theme of discussion was how to overcome difficult moments, something even world champions frequently face.

“When you feel super tired and you don’t want to get out of bed to train, those are the days that move you forward.” Patrik Lončarić shared.

“It’s normal to struggle and to be tired. You need that to get better,” Valent Sinković added. “It doesn’t go smoothly all the time but if you believe in your coach and in your program, you will get better.”

Before heading out to take a group photo at the sundial, the Sinkovićs and Lončarićs all made a point to connect how the lessons learned in the sport translate directly to life outside of the boat.  “Push yourself to the limit and see what the limit is,” Anton Lončarić said. “It’ll help you later in life, no matter what you’re doing.”

“Enjoy the process,” Martin Sinković advised. “The process of training and the process of life.”
