Nordic Ski Team Captures First NEPSAC Championship

Nordic Ski Team Captures First NEPSAC Championship

Following an undefeated dual meet record of 57-0 and their second-straight Lakes Region Championship, the Belmont Hill Nordic Ski Team capped off the greatest season in program history with its first NEPSAC Championship.

“This was a historic and incredibly exciting winter for our team,” said Head Coach Jake DeCaprio ’16. “Led by a dedicated cohort of seniors, expectations for daily practices were set high with a laser focus on defending our title as Lakes Region Champions and putting up a strong performance at the NEPSAC Championships. Week after week, the boys stepped up.”

After roller ski, agility, and strength training gave way to the start of the season on snow, the team opened strong in Lakes Region competition and never looked back. The team’s league title was the School’s fourth since 2019. Thanks to their incredible performances all season, Eita Fuse ’26, TZ Snail ’26, Saku Kerr ’29, and Fitz Courtney ’26 earned Lakes Region All League honors.

This year’s NEPSAC Championships were held on the challenging Pine Hill course at Gould Academy in Bethel, ME. A 5 km classic individual race in the morning was followed by a 4 x 2.5 km team relay race in the afternoon. Five Belmont Hill skiers finished in the top ten of the individual race, earning them All NEPSAC honors: Eita Fuse (2nd), TZ Snail (3rd), Saku Kerr (6th), Fitz Courtney (8th), and Patrick Snail ’28 (10th). Additionally, Kai Fuse ’29 (16th) and Pierce Courtney ’28 (18th) completed strong showings to earn All NEPSAC Honorable Mention distinctions.

In the team relays, both Belmont Hill groups put together impressive performances. The “A” relay team of TZ Snail, Fitz Courtney, Saku Kerr, and Eita Fuse won the race in dominant fashion with a margin of victory of nearly three minutes. The “B” relay team of Cooper Schuldt ’28, Owen Popkowski-Smith ’27, Ethan Xie ’26, and Patrick Snail finished close behind in third place.

All together, Belmont Hill won the NEPSAC Championship by a 23-point margin. “It was a truly incredible day for our team,” coach DeCaprio reflected. With their success this season and a strong core of skiers returning next year, Belmont Hill nordic skiing is positioned for more incredible days to come.
