Another exciting year in the Bolles Makerspace is well underway, with expanding teams and fresh initiatives maximizing the state-of-the-art facility in new ways. 

The Robotics teams are back at work after last year’s incredible season that further established the School as one of the top programs in the country. For the third straight year, Belmont Hill Robotics qualified for the World Championships. The Upper School team won the Think Award at the State Championships and finished in the top half of the over 850 international teams at the World Championships. The Middle School team thrived once again, winning the Massachusetts State Championships Excellence Award. At the World Championships, the team finished in the top 100 overall rankings, including a 12th place finish in the Robot Skills Competition. Thanks to those strong performances, the team completed the season ranked in the top 40 teams worldwide in the Global Skills Ranking. 

In response to the growing interest, three new teams were added this year. In addition to the regular season tournaments, including one hosted at Belmont Hill in November, the varsity teams will travel to signature events in October and December for a chance to qualify for the World Championships once again.  

After an impressive second-place finish at the National Championships this past May, the Belmont Hill Drone Team hopes to capture the top prize this year. A new team composed of primarily Form IV boys and the ever-growing Middle School Drone Club, ensures the program will be set up for success for years to come.  

The Makerspace also supports a variety of academic and extracurricular programs. Form III Engineering and the new Advanced Engineering and Design classes call the Makerspace home. In addition, classes in the English, science, and classics departments are utilizing the facilities for dynamic and collaborative experiences such as building model Roman Villas, themed board games, and an array of audio and visual productions in the Recording Studio that enhance their topics of study. The Middle School Sustainability Club is designing and constructing a vertical farm, just one of the projects that organizations on campus currently have in production with more debuting later this year.  

No matter the team, class, or club putting in the work, there is never a quiet moment in the Makerspace.

Mr. Fiori Releases Debut Jazz Fusion Record

When Belmont Hill faculty members take advantage of the teaching sabbaticals offered after ten years of service, some use the time away from the classroom to travel, work towards advanced degrees, or even enjoy a well earned opportunity to relax. Director of Instrumental Music Dan Fiori took a different approach in 2023 and spent the year immersed in the composing and recording of his debut jazz fusion album Undertow. The record, which was released in May and is available digitally and on vinyl, demonstrates the vast breadth of Mr. Fiori’s musical influences and the level of talent guiding Belmont Hill musicians on their own creative journeys.

Even in the summer, Head of Strength and Conditioning Andrew Markham keeps the Cross Family Fitness Center packed with student-athletes, underscoring the Belmont Hill Strength and Conditioning Program’s commitment to the boys. Week in, week out, all year long, Coach Markham’s program remains available for students to work out together, a true testament to the commitment and culture of Belmont Hill Athletics.

Maine Coast ‘26: A Culminating Experience in the Woodshop and on the River

This spring, Belmont Hill senior Fitz Courtney ‘26 found himself submerged in the Sheepscot River in Boothbay, Maine, much to his classmates' amusement. “We were kind of all joking around that someone on this trip was going to fall in, and everyone thought it would be me,” explained his classmate Cam Kelley ‘26. “It was pretty funny to see that Fitz had fallen in the water.”
