Impressive Spring Season Capped off By Athletic Awards Chapel

Athletic Director George Tahan delivered the Belmont Hill athletic awards and trophies on May 25, 2023. Letter winners stood to be recognized and team captains for next year were announced for some sports. The following is the list of honors. Additionally, Boston Globe All Scholastics were awarded to  CJ Winchenbaugh (golf) and Brady Miller (baseball.)

Spring Sports Awards 2023 

BASEBALL

Langdon Prouty Jr. Base Running Trophy
Is presented annually to that player who displays the highest skill in running the bases.

Baseball Plaque
Is awarded each spring to the player who has shown the greatest improvement in baseball.

Baseball Coaches’ Trophy
Is presented to that individual who has made the greatest contribution to the varsity team.

CREW 

Most Improved Rower Award 
Proposed by the varsity coaches and approved by the Athletic Policy Committee in 2007, this award is given to that boy who has made the most significant improvement in rowing on the varsity crew team.

Phillip Stewart Burbank Memorial Crew Trophy

Is presented in memory of their son, Phillip Stewart Burbank, Class of 1941, by his parents for the greatest contribution to crew.

The Inspirational Player Award
Approved by the Athletic Policy Committee in 2002, this award is given to that boy who’s consistent and steady golf play provided inspiration to his team.

Lacrosse Most Improved Player Award
Given to the player who has shown the greatest improvement during the season

Lacrosse Alumni Award
Given by the 1997 varsity lacrosse team, this award is presented to that individual who has made the greatest contribution to the varsity lacrosse team.

SAILING

Most Improved Sailing Award
Approved by the Athletic Policy Committee in 2009, this award is given to that boy who has made the most significant improvement in sailing on the varsity sailing team.

Awarded for the greatest contribution to the sport of sailing.

The Tennis Award
Presented to the most improved player on the varsity team.

Tennis Coach’s Trophy
Given anonymously, this trophy goes to the player who, in the opinion of the coach, has made the greatest contribution to the sport.

TRACK

John W. Fisher Trophy
Mr. Fisher was the founder of Belmont Hill Track and he coached varsity track for more than 30 years. This trophy was given in his memory by his loving wife, Madge, and his sons. The trophy is awarded to that young man, who in the judgment of the coaches, has made the greatest improvement.

This trophy is presented to that member of the team who is deemed “most valuable.”

HENRY B. SAWYER SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS

The Henry B. Sawyer awards were suggested by the school senate and approved by the athletic committee in 1987.  These sportsmanship awards recognize Mr. Sawyer’s 62 years of service to the school.These awards are presented seasonally by sport to “the ideal sportsman whose emotions are controlled by a genuine love and respect for his fellow man as well as the game.

BASEBALL

5th baseball had a very successful season. After beginning the season slowly with a 1-3-1 start, they won 8 of their last 9 games to finish with a 9-4-1 record. Congratulations to coaches McAlpin, Nathan, and Coppedge, senior coaches Siegel and Connell, and the 5th baseball team.

The 4th baseball team finished an excellent season with a record of 10 wins and 4 losses. Congratulations to the 4th baseball team and coaches Sweeney, Sullivan, and Najjar.

The 3rd baseball team finished a very successful season with a record of 9 wins and 6 losses. Congratulations to the 3rd baseball team and coaches Brownell and Peck.

The JV baseball team completed an outstanding season with a record of 15 wins and 2 losses. Congratulations to coaches O’Connell and McCarthy and the JV baseball team.

The Varsity baseball team has had a remarkable season to date with an overall record of 15 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie. They have clinched the ISL championship outright with a league record of 13 wins and 1 loss with one game remaining at BB&N.  Congratulations to the varsity baseball team and Coaches Cunningham, Danchik, Antetomaso, and MacPhee on a championship season.

CREW

The 3rd crew team finished a fun season on the Charles with a race record of 7-2, going undefeated at the first boat level. Four members of the middle school pulled sub 3 minute 20 second 1000m tests, earning entry to Belmont Hill Middle School Crew's Hall of Fame. Congratulations to coaches Ryan, McDougal, Pierce, and senior coaches Carroll, and Mezzanotte.

The Varsity crew team has had a very successful season to date, with the majority of Belmont Hill crews undefeated in regular season racing. The top 4’s head into this weekend's NEIRA Championships with two 1st seeds and two 2nd seeds, and a firm goal of winning the New England Team Championship. Congratulations to the varsity crew team and coaches Richards, George, Calloway, Sampson, Parker, Stone, and Parejo.

GOLF

The Varsity golf team went undefeated in ISL play with an ISL record of 18 wins, 0 losses, and 1 tie, thereby earning them the ISL Walworth Sullivan League Championship. They followed that up by winning the ISL Kingman Tournament at Newport Country Club. At the ISL Kingman Tournament CJ Winchenbaugh was the individual winner shooting 67 and thereby winning the Patty Whitney Award. He was also named ISL MVP/Globe All Scholastic. Congratulations to Coach Doar, Coach Duarte and the varsity golf team. 18-0-1 league record; 19-2-1 overall

LACROSSE

The 5th lacrosse team finished an outstanding season with a record of 11 wins and 3 losses.  Congratulations to coaches Masiiwa, McCarthy, and Zellner and the 5th lacrosse team. 

The 4th lacrosse team finished an excellent season with a record of 10 wins and 5 losses.  Congratulations to coaches Carr and Fritz and the 4th lacrosse team. 

The 3rd lacrosse team finished an excellent season with a record of 13 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie.  Congratulations to coaches Smith, Phinney, and Fast and the 3rd lacrosse team. 

The JV lacrosse team finished an outstanding season with a record of 11 wins and 1 loss.  Congratulations to coaches Sullivan, Zellner, and Cofield and the JV lacrosse team. 

The Varsity lacrosse team completed an outstanding season with a record 15 wins and 1 loss. They maintained possession of the panel trophy by beating Middlesex 15 to 10.  Congratulations varsity lacrosse team and coaches Sullivan, Butler, Hargrove, and Fahey. 

TENNIS

The 3rd tennis team completed a remarkable season with an overall record of 9 wins and 4 losses.  Congratulations to the 3rd tennis team and coaches Montanaro and Rupely.

The JV tennis team completed an excellent season with an overall record of 10 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie. Congratulations to Coach Harvey and the JV tennis team.

The Varsity tennis team has had an outstanding season thus far with a record of 13 wins and 5 losses with one match remaining. The team qualified for the NE Tennis Tournament for the 18th consecutive year.  At the tournament this past weekend they defeated Westminster School in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals to Roxbury Latin.  Congratulations and good luck to Coach Speer and the varsity tennis team in their final match on Friday. TRACK

The Varsity track team had yet another impressive championship spring finishing the season with 14 wins and 1 loss in dual meet competition. The team finished first at the ISL Championship meet at Thayer thereby capturing their 5th consecutive ISL Championship. They then went on to finish 5th at the Class A New England Championship at Andover. Congratulations to the varsity track team and Coaches Harder, Decaprio, Gorman, Kirby, and Fowler.
