Harvard Improv Troupe Visits Improv and Drama Clubs

While the Kraft Theater was purposefully set up for little more than dim lighting and a blank stage, it was full of rapidly evolving characters, locales, and situations. This spark of creativity was facilitated by Harvard's Improv Troupe, the Immediate Gratification Players (IGP), who visited campus for a collaborative workshop with members of Belmont Hill’s Improv Club and Drama Club.

“The IGP did an incredible job leading our boys to grow using several key techniques through fun improv activities that sparked their imagination and developed their public speaking skills,” said Chair of the Performing Arts Paul DiResta. “Both our club leaders and the IGP specifically noted that it was one of the best workshops they'd ever participated in.”

During their time together, the combined groups participated in a series of exercises and games that honed skills in creating characters, building on a scene’s momentum, and mastering the improv mentality of “yes, and”. The Harvard actors also encouraged the boys to embrace the opportunity to use improv to create appropriate comedy that can spark laughter in everyone from age five to 95.

“Happily, our boys were in peak performance, and their quick wit and hilarious choices kept both active participants and the audience laughing throughout their time together,” Mr. DiResta said. “We're excited to work with IGP again next year to bring more laughs and confidence to the stage!”

When Belmont Hill faculty members take advantage of the teaching sabbaticals offered after ten years of service, some use the time away from the classroom to travel, work towards advanced degrees, or even enjoy a well earned opportunity to relax. Director of Instrumental Music Dan Fiori took a different approach in 2023 and spent the year immersed in the composing and recording of his debut jazz fusion album Undertow. The record, which was released in May and is available digitally and on vinyl, demonstrates the vast breadth of Mr. Fiori’s musical influences and the level of talent guiding Belmont Hill musicians on their own creative journeys.
