Belmont Hill recently welcomed Mustafa Soykurt, the Consul General of France, for an engaging visit during X Block. Students from French classes, along with members of the school community, had the unique opportunity to learn about diplomacy directly from a professional diplomat.
The session, conducted primarily in French under the guidance of French teacher Mme Montanaro, provided students with an immersive linguistic and cultural experience. Mr. Soykurt shared insights into his diplomatic role, personal and professional background, and the intricacies of diplomatic life. Students actively participated by asking questions in French, demonstrating their language skills and curiosity.
The Consul General discussed his critical role in supporting the 11,000 French citizens in the region. He explained the important work of providing essential consular services, maintaining communications with Paris, and promoting French culture in the United States. Notably, Mr. Soykurt expressed particular enthusiasm for engaging with students and promoting Franco-American relations, including supporting students interested in studying in France.
Interestingly, Mme Montanaro shared her own connection to diplomatic work, having begun her career at the French Consulate in Boston.
Following the formal remarks, students enjoyed a charcuterie board and had the opportunity to engage in direct conversation with Mr. Soykurt. This informal interaction allowed students to practice their French language skills and gain personal insights into diplomatic life.
The school is especially grateful to the Davis family for facilitating this connection and making the visit possible.
