Former New England Patriots Star Devin McCourty Speaks at Inspiring School Meeting

Former Patriots star Devin McCourty visited Belmont Hill on October 3rd to participate in a discussion about character and leadership. Mr. McCourty played 13 seasons for the Patriots and received two Pro Bowl selections while playing for three Super-Bowl-winning teams.

Greg Schneider, Ronald M. Druker ’62 Head of School, opened the chapel by thanking Will Forde ’05 for his role in bringing Mr. McCourty to Belmont Hill. Two members of the varsity football team joined Mr. McCourty on stage, class president Luke Travaglini ’24 and Jordan Summers ’25, for a question-and-answer discussion. They posed thought-provoking questions regarding leadership, character, and lessons learned during Mr. McCourty’s life and career.

He urged the boys to appreciate how fortunate they are to be Belmont Hill students. “Take advantage of sitting in a room like this,” he said. “All of you come here…to Belmont Hill for a reason. You all have different goals and passions…Someday you'll be an alum of Belmont Hill, but you come here with a common goal to graduate and be successful…You guys aren't all from the same town, you don't all have the same background, (but) you come together and you have a good day you enjoy each other, you learn from each other. Don't take that for granted.”

Toward the end of the chapel, he offered a particularly introspective insight to the boys. “I think the thing that I learned the most…is giving myself (the) grace of saying ‘I’m not the guy that I want to be today. That's okay, tomorrow's another day to improve.’ (This) allows me to give myself that grace to improve each day because we learn…that God gives us that grace every day because we fall short. How do we give ourselves that grace? And then grant that grace to other people?”

Mr. McCourty received a rousing standing ovation at the end of the meeting. Afterward, he spent time with some varsity football players and members to the School Senate to continue the discussion.
