After the conclusion of the Fall season, Belmont Hill gathered to recognize athletic accomplishments. Athletic Director George Tahan presented the following awards and recognitions in School Meeting on November 27, 2023. Belmont Hill was honored to host Robert S. Hurlbutt, son of Dr. Robert S. Hurlbut ’29 in Chapel to present the eponymous football trophy. Below are the names of the award winners and remarks by Mr. Tahan.

The Cross Country Award is presented to that team member who has been the most valuable performer this year.

The Dr. Robert Saterlee Hurlbut ’29 Memorial Football Trophy
We are honored to have members of Dr. Hurlbut's family in Chapel this morning. Presenting the award today is Dr. Hurlbut’s son, Robert, headmaster emeritus of the Park School.
This trophy is presented in memory of Dr. Robert Saterlee Hurlbut class of 1929 by his widow, Mrs. Sally Baldwin. It is given to the player who in the judgment of the coaches has made the greatest improvement in the sport.

The William E. Croke Trophy
This trophy is given in honor of Bill Croke who served as athletic director for 37 years. He served Belmont Hill School with loyalty and effectiveness and was respected and loved by all. This trophy is awarded to the player who in the judgment of the coaches was the most valuable player.

Henry B. Sawyer Sportsmanship Awards
The Henry B. Sawyer Awards were suggested by the school senate and approved by the athletic committee in 1987. These sportsmanship awards recognize Mr. Sawyer’s 52 years of service to the school. These awards are presented seasonally by sport to “ the ideal sportsman whose emotions are controlled by a genuine love and respect for his fellow man as well as the game.

Soccer
The 5th Soccer team completed an outstanding season with an overall record of 13 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. Congratulations to coaches Vargas and MacPhee and the 5th soccer team.
The 4th Soccer team captured the Belmont Cup by defeating the Town of Belmont Middle School in a two game aggregate score, tying the first game 1-1 and winning the second game 2-0. Congratulations to coaches George, McDonald, and Vasiliadis and the 4th soccer team.
The 3rd B Soccer team completed a remarkable season with an overall record of 8 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties. Congratulations to the 3rd B soccer team and coachesLeonardis and Martellini.
The 3rd A Soccer team completed a fantastic season with an overall record of 11 wins, 2 losses and 3 ties. Congratulations to the 3rd A soccer team and coaches Steffey, Fast, and Fritz.
The JV A Soccer team completed an excellent season with a record of 13 wins and 3 losses and 1 tie. Congratulations to coaches Schneider and Hegarty and the JV A soccer team.
The Varsity Soccer team completed an outstanding season with a record of 13 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie. They finished tied for fourth in the ISL and were awarded the ISL Fritz Weidergott Improvement Trophy, which is awarded to that team which improves its standing in the league by the most number of points from one season to the next. Congratulations to the varsity soccer team and coaches Montoya, Holland, Bracken, and Vasiliadis.
Cross Country
The 3rd Cross Country team completed an undefeated championship season with a record of 11 wins and no losses. They finished first at the middle school championship race at Roxbury Latin. At the championship, the team placed 8 runners in the top 20 finishers. Roger Wellington (20th), David Vater (19th), Johannes Eikeboom (11th), Colin Grierson (10th), Cooper Schuldt (8th), Sebastian Colberg (6th), Riley Marth (5th), and Declan Woolbert, (4th). Congratulations to coaches Richards, MacDougal, Chiu, and Kirby and the 3rd Cross Country team.
The JV Cross Country team completed a remarkable season with an overall record of 12 wins and 1 loss. They finished first at the Bobcat Invitational in New Hampshire. They finished first at the ISL Championship race. At the ISL Championship race, seven Belmont Hill runners finished in the top 15 runners including Carver Porter (13th), Yamin Ibrahim (12th), Jackson Pagan (11th) and Alex Behn (8th) Angus Harrison (7th), Maksim Roman (4th), Davis Woolbert (1st). They followed that up with a third place finish at the NEPSAC Championship race
The Varsity Cross Country team also completed a very successful season with an overall record of 9 wins and 3 losses. The varsity team also finished first at the Bobcat Invitational. They finished tied for second at the ISL Championship race. At the ISL Championship race, three Belmont Hill runners finished in the top 25 including Nate Voss (23rd), Miles Sandoski (13th), and Will Trautz (3rd). The team followed that up with a fourth place finish at the NEPSAC Championship race. At the NEPSAC Championship race, two Belmont Hill runners finished in the top 25, Henry Buckley Jones (23rd) and Will Trautz (11th).

Football
The 4th Football team completed an excellent season with a record of 4 wins and 2 losses and 2 ties. Congratulations to the 4th football team and coaches Sweeney, Davis, and Williams.
The JV Football team completed a terrific season with a record of 3 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. Congratulations to the JV football team and coaches LaLiberte, Sullivan, and Fulham.
The Varsity Football team completed a championship season with an overall record of 7 wins and 2 losses. They captured the ISL Championship outright and earned a NEPSAC bowl bid to host the Danny Smith Bowl. In that game the team lost a hard fought 27-14 decision to Deerfield Academy. Congratulations to coaches Fucillo, Butler, Harvey, Laliberte, Fulham, Sullivan, Anam, Cayemite, Fucillo, Gorman, and Fahey and the Varsity Football team.
Finally in football, each fall the ISL Football Coaches vote to recognize one player with the Lineman of the Year Award. This year that award goes to Peter Fiumara.
