Fall Athletic Achievements Recognized

During this morning's Fall Athletic Awards Chapel, the Soccer, Football, and Cross Country team Captains began the program by reading the names of letter winners. The ceremony, led by Athletic Director George Tahan then proceeded to recognize individual athletic achievements, including trophy winners, all-league selections, and Henry B. Sawyer Sportsmanship awards. Notably, Coach Montoya was named NEPSAC Soccer Coach of the Year and the Bob Souza Championship Bowl was presented. Mr. Tahan concluded by thanking coaches, staff, and support personnel for their contributions to a successful fall athletic season. The list of of winners appears below.
 


CROSS COUNTRY TROPHIES

The Cross Country Award is presented to that team member who has been the most valuable performer this year.

FOOTBALL TROPHIES

The Dr. Robert Saterlee Hurlbut ’29 Memorial Football Trophy 

We are honored to have members of Dr. Hurlbut's family in Chapel this morning. Presenting the award today is Dr. Hurlbut’s son, Robert, headmaster emeritus of the Park School.

This trophy is presented in memory of Dr. Robert Saterlee Hurlbut (Class of 1929) by his widow, Sally Baldwin. It is given to the player who in the judgment of the coaches has made the greatest improvement in the sport.

The William E. Croke Trophy
This trophy is given in honor of Bill Croke who served as athletic director for 37 years. He served Belmont Hill School with loyalty and effectiveness and was respected and loved by all. This trophy is awarded to the player who in the judgment of the coaches was the most valuable player.

SOCCER TROPHIES

The Soccer Trophy is presented to the player, who in the judgment of his coaches, has made the greatest improvement in the sport this year.

The Soccer Coaches’ Trophy is awarded annually to that player who has made the greatest contribution to the varsity soccer team.

HENRY B. SAWYER SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS

The Henry B. Sawyer Awards were suggested by the school senate and approved by the athletic committee in 1987. These sportsmanship awards recognize Mr. Sawyer’s 52 years of service to the school. These awards are presented seasonally by sport to “ the ideal sportsman whose emotions are controlled by a genuine love and respect for his fellow man as well as the game.

Other Fall Accomplishments

In Soccer

The 5th soccer team completed an outstanding season with an overall record of 9 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties. Congratulations to coaches Montanaro, DeFraia, and Montanaro and the 5th soccer team.

The 4th soccer team captured the Belmont Cup by defeating the Town of Belmont Middle School in a two game aggregate score, winning the first game 5-0 and winning the second game 3-2.  Congratulations to coaches George, McDonald, and Vasiliadis and the 4th soccer team.

The JV A soccer team completed an undefeated season with a record of 14 wins, no losses, and 3 ties. Congratulations to coaches C. Schneider and Hegarty and the JV A soccer team.  

The varsity soccer team completed a remarkable season with a record of 13 wins, 2 losses, and 3 ties. This included going unbeaten for their final 14 games of the season.  They finished tied for 2nd in the ISL. Congratulations to the varsity soccer team and coaches Montoya, Holland, Bracken, and Vasiliadis. 

Also in soccer, Coach Montoya was voted the NEPSAC Soccer Coach of The Year. 


In Cross Country

The 3rd cross country team completed a championship season with a record of 11 wins and 1 loss. They finished first at the middle school championship race at Roxbury Latin. At the championship, the team placed 5 runners in the top 20 finishers. Henry Oh (20th), Roger Wellington (17th), Yaseen Saeed (9th), Roger Zhang (8th), and Colin Grierson (2nd). Congratulations to coaches MacDougal, Richards, Pak, and Kirby and the 3rd cross country team.

The JV cross-country team completed a remarkable season with an overall record of 15 wins and 1 loss. They finished first at the Bobcat Invitational in New Hampshire. They finished 4th at the ISL Championship race. At the ISL Championship race, ten Belmont Hill runners finished in the top 30 runners including Juan Pablo Fernandez del Castillo (29th), Will Achtmeyer (27th), Yohannes Eikeboom (19th), Maksim Roman (18th), George Carroll (14th), Tyler Smith (13th), Babikir Saeed (11th), Sebastian Colberg (10th), Jack Good (9th), and Riley Marth (6th). They followed that up with a 4th place finish at the NEPSAC Championship race where 4 Belmont Hill runners finished in the top 30 runners including Sebastian Colberg (30th), Maksim Roman (26th), Babikir Saeed (23rd), and Henry Buckley-Jones (6th). 

The varsity cross-country team also completed an outstanding season with an overall record of 14 wins and 2 losses. They finished second at the Bobcat Invitational. They finished 4th at the ISL Championship race.  At the ISL Championship race, three Belmont Hill runners finished in the top 30 including, TZ Snail (26th), Fitz Courtney (15th), and Will Trautz (1st). They followed that up with a 4th place finish at the NEPSAC Championship race at Hotchkiss. Two Belmont Hill runners finished in the top 25, Henry Buckley Jones (23rd) and Will Trautz (11th).  

Congratulations to the JV and Varsity cross country teams and coaches Trautz, Gorman, Harder, DeCaprio, and Bracey.  

Also, in cross country Will Trautz broke three ISL course records this season, setting new marks at Brooks, BB&N, and St. Sebastian’s. He was also named the ISL Cross Country MVP & Globe All Scholastic.  


In Football

The 5th football team completed an undefeated season with a record of 6 wins and no losses. Congratulations to the 4th football team and coaches Kaplan, Peck, and Sullivan.

The varsity football team completed an outstanding season with an overall record of 6 wins and 3 losses. They finished third in the ISL and earned a NEPSAC Championship bowl bid to host the Bob Souza Bowl. In that game the team defeated Worcester Academy 38-7 to capture the NEPSAC Bowl Championship. Congratulations to coaches Fucillo, Butler, Harvey, LaLiberte, Fulham, Messina, Sullivan, Cayemite, Fucillo, Gorman, Fahey, and Reid and the varsity football team.  



Special thanks go out to our coaches for a terrific job this fall, to Mr. Davis and Mr. Fucillo for all their hard work in the athletic office, to Mr. Chin and Mr. King for their hard work in the training room, to Mr. Matos, Mrs. Rudzinski, Mr. Carey, Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Schools, and the whole facilities and grounds staff for their tireless work on our athletic fields, and to Mr. Negron for his hard work in the equipment room.
