Dr. Michael Fowlin Leads Powerful Diversity Program

Dr. Michael Fowlin, better known as Mykee, is a psychologist, performer, and poet, who uses his unique talents as a professional actor to promote worldwide inclusion. Last March, Dr. Fowlin presented his program to Middle School students and the presentation was so well received, he returned to share it with Form V and Form VI.

Using minimal props but changing his voice, mannerisms, and posture, Fowlin encapsulated different personas including a gay football player, a six-year-old boy with ADHD, a young high school girl struggling with gender inequality, and a teen with cerebral palsy.

Through his character transformations, he articulated messages about biases, bullying, and pain that many people struggle with but hide behind the mask of wanting to fit in. His overarching messages were to encourage people to acknowledge their own pain, to help others around them by standing up for injustices, and to promote kindness.

Fowlin completed the powerful and emotional performance by reciting the Langston Hughes poem “Still Here,” and reminding the boys to be the agents of positive change, that they are not alone, and that they are more beautiful than any words that may be used against them.
