Dr. Lisa Damour Engages Students, Faculty, and Parents in School Visit

Dr. Lisa Damour Engages Students, Faculty, and Parents in School Visit
Over a series of discussions and presentations, clinical psychologist and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Lisa Damour engaged Belmont Hill students, faculty, and parents in conversations on mental health and the teenage experience.

A graduate of Yale University with a doctorate from the University of Michigan, Dr. Damour specializes in adolescent development, mental health, and emotional well-being, and currently serves as a Senior Advisor to the Schubert Center for Child Studies at Case Western Reserve University. Her books, Untangled, Under Pressure, and The Emotional Lives of Teenagers–which have been translated into 23 languages–seek to help young people and their families navigate the challenges of growing up. Her forthcoming book, The Emotional Lives of Parents, debuts in February 2027. Families may also be familiar with Dr. Damour’s work behind the scenes in media, as she served as a key mental health consultant to Pixar for the film Inside Out 2, helping shape its authentic portrayal of teenage emotions.

In a morning Chapel, Dr. Damour shared with the boys her perspective on mental health and how to better understand why people do what they do. Near the end, she asked them to imagine the day they’re 30 years old and to consider what two words they hope people would use to describe them at that point. By holding those descriptors as a goal to work towards, students gain a valuable tool for decision-making, whether evaluating which cultural norms are worth inhabiting or the best ways to cope with challenging situations.

This combination of scientific rigor and practical advice resonated with faculty and parents as well. Dr. Damour’s full day on campus began in a meeting with faculty members, where she emphasized the powerful impact strong connections with adults can have on teenagers and shared the best ways teachers can foster meaningful relationships. In the evening, she presented to the parent community, an event held in the Hamilton Chapel due to the overwhelming turnout.

While her visit to Belmont Hill was split across the different constituents, each with its own perspective and needs, Dr. Damour created impactful connections across the entire School community.
