Each year, the Cum Laude chapel honors the academic achievements of Belmont Hill students. In particular, the chapel marks the exceptional achievement of Form VI students who have been granted membership in the Cum Laude Society, the highest academic honor a student can attain at Belmont Hill.
"This is a chapel where we celebrate our culture of intellectual excellence at Belmont Hill," said Greg Schneider, Ronald M. Druker '62 Head of School in his opening remarks. "We celebrate that this is a community where it is cool to be smart and cool to do your best. We know that curiosity, questions, engagement, and risk-taking make the learning better for everyone – we all contribute to this culture as scholars. Ours is a school filled with Makers, writers, artists, researchers, and classicists. Whatever your intellectual passion may be, we celebrate your desire to pursue it deeply within the context of the liberal arts philosophy of the school as a whole."
A full listing of the academic honors is presented below. Following the award ceremony, Mrs. Phinney, associate director of college counseling, gave an inspiring and heartfelt talk to the boys. She shared a powerful story illustrating the concept of inner conflicts using the metaphor of two wolves, a tale of a grandfather explaining this to his grandson. When the young person asks which wolf prevails, the grandfather wisely responds, “Whichever one you feed.”

The Donato Monaco American History Prize was established in 1986 by Dr. Anthony Monaco and Mary Lou Monaco, whose three sons Peter ‘82, Mark ‘83, and Chris ‘86 attended Belmont Hill. The Prize honors Dr. Monaco’s father Donato Monaco, an Italian immigrant whose mantra was always “God Bless America,” and is given annually to that student who, when in the Fifth Form, demonstrated depth of interest, clarity, and high quality of research for this major research paper.
This year’s Monaco American History is a dual award:
Noah Farb, for his paper entitled:"From Prohibition to Plutocrats: The Untold Story of the Demise of Jewish Organized Crime in Early to Mid-20th Century America"
And
Mark Price, for his paper entitled: "The Avian Advantage: How a Variety of Ornithological Practices Have Contributed to Bird Conservation"
The Profile Prize is given annually to that student who during his time in the Fourth Form best captured the spirit of this endeavor through his Profile Paper.
