Community Service Club Raises Money for the Equal Justice Initiative

When Anthony Ray Hinton spoke in the Hamilton Chapel on February 5, 2026 recounting his story of serving 30 years on Alabama’s Death Row for a crime he didn’t commit, he encouraged the young men of Belmont Hill to be engaged citizens who seek justice for all. It didn’t take long for the Community Service Club to turn Mr. Hinton’s inspiration into action. 

Following Mr. Hinton’s powerful visit, club leaders Rylan Dean ’26 and Jack Ramanathan ’26 organized a way to continue the conversation and directly contribute to the cause Mr. Hinton championed. The club hosted a screening in Kraft Theater of the film Just Mercy, based on the memoir by lawyer Bryan Stevenson who represented Mr. Hinton in the trial that ultimately freed him from death row. The screening cost $10 with all the funds raised going to the club’s upcoming food packaging project and to the Equal Justice Initiative, the nonprofit organization founded by Mr. Stevenson. 

While the EJI is just one of the many causes students will support this year, the Just Mercy screening shows how community conversations can be the start of meaningful work on campus.
