Belmont Hill School celebrated a significant milestone in its athletics program, honoring Head Varsity Soccer Coach Jorge Montoya for reaching an impressive 300 wins. During School Meeting on September 20, 2024, Athletic Director George Tahan invited Coach Montoya as well as Varsity Soccer Captains Will Umscheid ‘25 and Blake DeCosta ‘26 on stage to unveil a commemorative banner, which will be proudly displayed in the Jordan Athletic Center.
The 300th win occurred on November 1, 2023, with a 2-0 victory over Roxbury Latin. Since joining Belmont Hill in 1993, Coach Montoya has guided the soccer program through three decades of success, including 15 appearances in the NE Prep School A Tournament and five ISL Championships.
"I've come to appreciate just how humble and selfless Coach Montoya is," said Grayson Holland '08, a former player and current colleague. "He has always put his players first, creating an environment that allows them to grow both on and off the field. His approach to coaching is never about himself, which makes this milestone even more special for all who've been a part of Belmont Hill soccer over the last 31 years."
Known as Señor Montoya on campus, he teaches Spanish and serves as a Form III advisor. A graduate of Boston College, Coach Montoya was captain of the varsity soccer team during his senior year. He went on to play seven seasons professionally, including serving as captain of the Boston Bolts, and holds a USSF A coaching license.
In recent years, players of Coach Montoya have gone on to compete at the following schools: Cornell University, Colby College, Bowdoin College, Northeastern University, Haverford College, Kenyon College, Occidental College, Union College, and UNH.
