Anthony Ray Hinton Shares Remarkable Life Story

Anthony Ray Hinton Shares Remarkable Life Story

On February 5, 2026, Belmont Hill proudly welcomed Anthony Ray Hinton to campus for a deeply moving and inspirational School Meeting. Mr. Hinton shared his story of surviving for 30 years on Alabama's Death Row following a wrongful conviction and the decades-long journey to his exoneration and freedom.

Since being freed in 2015, Mr. Hinton has traveled the world sharing his story and discussing the changes that need to be made to prevent similar injustices from happening to others. In 2018, Mr. Hinton published The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row, which was selected for Oprah’s Book Club and is a New York Times bestseller.

In the lead up to Mr. Hinton’s visit, English classes of all grade levels read excerpts of the memoir Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, the lawyer who helped win back Mr. Hinton’s freedom. Thanks to the students’ enthusiasm for the material, many classes went on to read the entire book.

Following the presentation, Mr. Hinton stayed for a more intimate conversation with students. During this session, held in the Chapel due to the overwhelming turnout, Mr. Hinton answered questions about his faith, the daily experience of life on Death Row, and countless other topics brought forth by faculty and students alike. While speaking with honesty and openness about his experiences, Mr. Hinton never flinched from encouraging the young men in the audience to be engaged citizens who seek justice for all.
