Ending a remarkable 39-year run, Ken Martin '65 announced that he will be stepping down as varsity hockey coach.
He will return next year to coach at the Middle School level. The announcement comes just after Coach Martin achieved the historic milestone of 700 wins, making him the winningest high school coach in Massachusetts history. Never one to pay attention to personal accomplishments, Coach Martin said that trying to reach 800 wins was not even a consideration.
"That's just not who I am," he said emphatically. "I don't coach for personal milestones, I coach because I love the game and I want to inspire that same feeling in the boys who play for me."
Coach Martin said that at the end of the season he discussed his coaching status with his wife, Linda, and felt that this was a good time to make a move. "I really didn't want to reach a point where people might think I stayed too long. We just finished our sixth consecutive season in post-season play--no day school has done that--and with the 700 wins behind me, I thought the time was right. I am looking forward to spending more time with my family, especially during the winter holidays."
He leaves an incredible legacy, with a record of 707-270-43, for a winning percentage of over 70 percent. But Coach Martin wants to remembered for more than his coaching. "First and foremost, I'm a teacher, that is what is most important."
At a recent School Meeting he was honored with a plaque commemorating his 700th win, and received two rousing standing ovations, and a moving tribute by Athletic Director George Tahan. To see video clips from the presentation, please look for links elsewhere on this page.
